In this fourth selection of Novellen written in the 1850s-70s, The Farmstead and the title-story depict reversals of fortune in small landowning and burgher families in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. Carsten the Trustee is one of Storm's most powerful achievements . St George's Almshouse is a poignant love story told from complementary viewpoints. The more light-hearted By the Fireside , in which a teller of ghost stories finally wins over an initially sceptical audience, links with Storm's use of the supernatural in his later works. The first- and last-mentioned stories are published in English for the first time.

The translator's end-notes and Afterword contain the wealth of background biographical, historical and topographical information that readers have found so enhancing and absorbing in Denis Jackson's previous Storm editions.
